Summary

Leo Africanus was a 16th-century Andalusi adventurer and geographer respected for his knowledge of the Barbary Coast and Sudanic Africa. Little is known about his life, and most information comes from his autobiographical notes and a few 16th-century European texts. He was born in Granada, Spain, around 1494, and his family moved to Morocco soon after. Leo Africanus wrote a celebrated description of African geography, but some have suggested that he may not have existed and that his work was composed by a Venetian ghostwriter. Despite this, a few examples of his autographs have survived, and a comprehensive biography has been written by Dietrich Rauchenberger.
