Summary

Kiel was founded in 1233 by Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg, and his son, Count Johann I, conferred on it its town charter in 1242. The city developed slowly, becoming a member of the Hanseatic League in 1284 and receiving the right to mint coinage in 1318. A major event was the foundation of the state university by Duke Christian-Albrecht in 1665, which still carries his name today. Kiel was never a truly Free Town, being under the sovereignty of various rulers, including the counts of Schauenburg, the dukes of Gottorf, the Danish kings, and Tsar Peter III of Russia. After the foundation of the last German Empire in 1871, Kiel became the "Reichskriegshafen" and developed into its most important shipyard town, expanding rapidly in terms of population, economic growth, and territorial expansion.
