Lewis Harcourt, known as Loulou, was born in 1863 to William Harcourt and his wife Marie Therese Lister. He was raised in a close and protective relationship with his father, who was a Liberal MP and cabinet minister. Loulou became his father's private secretary and played a significant role in his political career, influencing his speeches and actions. He was a shrewd judge of politics and had considerable influence behind the scenes. Loulou supported his father during the Home Rule split in 1886 and helped him remain in the Liberal Party. He also served the party by acting as secretary of the Home Counties Liberal Federation and organizing election campaigns. Despite being tempted to embark on an independent political career, Loulou remained devoted to his father and played a key role in his political life until his death in 1904.
