Summary

Malaysian aborigines, known as Orang Asli, are divided into two main linguistic groups: Austronesian and Austroasiatic. The Austronesian group, consisting of six speech systems, is the focus of this study, which examines their subgrouping based on geo-history of settlement and linguistic relationships. The results show that five of the six speech systems are in dialectal relationship with Malay, while the sixth is a distinct language. All six can be linked to an ancestor form, Proto-Malayic. The Orang Asli population is approximately 100,000, with the Austroasiatic group being more diverse and occupying a larger geographical region.
