Summary

Maria Callas arrived in Athens in 1937 at the age of 13 after her parents' separation. She began studying at the National Odeum under Maria Trivella, then with Elvira de Hidalgo in 1939. De Hidalgo introduced Callas to Costis Bastias, Director-General of the Royal Theatre of Greece, who signed her first professional contract in June 1940. Callas made her debut as an understudy in Franz von Suppé's Boccaccio in 1941 and later played her first lead role as Floria Tosca in 1942. After the war, she returned to New York in 1945 and began her international career in 1947. Callas returned to Athens in 1957 for a concert at the Odeum Herodes Atticus, but the event was affected by local politics. She met with Costis Bastias again in 1960 upon her arrival at Athens's International Hellinikon Airport.
