Summary

The Great Seal of the United States is not a Masonic emblem, nor does it contain hidden Masonic symbols. The eye in the pyramid is not a Masonic symbol, and its interpretation on the seal is different from the Masonic symbol, representing an active intervention of God in the affairs of men, rather than a passive awareness by God of the activities of men. The design of the seal was created by non-Masons, with the exception of Benjamin Franklin, who contributed no Masonic content. The all-seeing eye was a common artistic convention for an omniscient deity in Renaissance art, and its use on the seal can be traced to a non-Mason consultant, Pierre Du Simitiere. The first official use of the all-seeing eye as a Masonic symbol was in 1797, 14 years after the design of the seal was adopted.
