Summary

Miguel de Cervantes, born in 1547 in Alcalá de Henares, fled Madrid in 1569 after injuring his rival Antonio Segura in a duel, facing arrest and amputation of his right hand. He returned to Spain 20 years later, after losing the use of his left arm at the Battle of Lepanto and being held prisoner in Algiers. In Madrid, he coincided with great writers like Quevedo and Lope de Vega, trying to succeed in courtyard theatres, but had little success. Although Don Quixote was met with great acclaim, Cervantes died in poverty in 1616. The Literary Quarter, where Cervantes and other great writers lived, was a place of friendships and insults. Multiple monuments were erected in his honor, and the institute tasked with disseminating Spanish language and culture bears his name. Alcalá de Henares, Cervantes' birthplace, has his house-museum and hosts the Cervantes Prize ceremony. Various locations in Madrid, such as Casa Alberto, Corral del Príncipe, and Instituto Cervantes, are connected to Cervantes' life and work.
