Summary

Il monte Nantai a Nikko, nella prefettura di Tochigi, è stato un oggetto di fede fin dall'epoca precedente al periodo Nara. Sulla base di questa fede, il corpo religioso di Nikko Shugendo, la cui attività era quella di prendere esercizi ascetici solo in montagna, fu organizzato nel periodo Kamakura. Lo Shugendo è una religione peculiare del Giappone, fondata sul buddismo, sul taoismo e su altri pensieri. I Nikko Shugendo cercarono la loro origine in San Shodo, che fu il primo buddista a salire sulla cima del monte Nantai nel periodo Nara, e stabilirono il modo di esercizi o di buone maniere basato sulla biografia di San Shodo "Hodarasan Konryuu Shugyo Nikki".
