Summary

Austen Henry Layard visited Sofuk, the sheikh of the Shammar Arab tribe, near the Tigris River, accompanied by Mr. Rassam, his wife, and several native gentlemen from Mosul. They traveled with a large caravan, including tents, provisions, and armed men, and passed by the ruins of the monastery of Mar Elias. The next morning, they entered the desert, where they found a lush landscape with flowers, water, and wildlife. They encountered herds of camels and met with the son of the sheikh of the Haddedeen tribe, who invited them to rest and eat with his family. The Arabs slaughtered a sheep and served it with sour milk and butter, and the group resumed their journey in the afternoon, accompanied by their new host, Mormous.
