Summary

Die Shōgitai und die Schlacht von Ueno 1868 – Geschichte eines Widerstands gegen die Meiji-Restauration. Der Ueno-Hügel war ursprünglich Standort des bedeutenden buddhistischen Tempels Kan’eiji, der 1625 auf Anweisung von Shōgun Tokugawa Iemitsu begonnen wurde. Der Tempel diente als zweiter Familien- und Begräbnistempel der Tokugawa-Dynastie und befand sich auf einem Hügel im Bezirk Taitō im Norden des Zentrums von Tokyo. Am 4. Juli 1868 fand die Schlacht von Ueno zwischen der neuen kaiserlichen Armee und der Tokugawa-loyalen Shōgitai-Miliz statt, bei der der Tempel Kan’eiji zerstört wurde. Heute erinnern ein Denkmal und eine Statue von Saigō Takamori an die Schlacht. Der Sturz des Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshinobu im November 1867 und die Besetzung des Kaiserpalastes in Kyoto durch Chōshū und Satsuma im Januar 1868 führten zum Boshin-Krieg und letztendlich zur Meiji-Restauration.
