Summary

Krijgsgevangenen uit een groep van ca. tweeduizend moesten in Palembang zwaar werk verrichten, voornamelijk in de haven. Alleen officieren waren bevoorrecht en kregen meer te eten, terwijl onderofficieren en manschappen verhongerden. Van midden '44 tot augustus '45 stierven ca. driehonderdvijftig onderofficieren en manschappen in Palembang, velen aan hongerziekte. Een schatting is dat één op de vier tot vijf van de tweeduizend krijgsgevangenen is omgekomen. Er waren ook veel slachtoffers onder krijgsgevangenen die naar de Molukken en Flores werden overgebracht om vliegvelden aan te leggen.
