Summary

The New Poor Law medical service played a crucial role in controlling infectious disease in Birmingham and Wolverhampton, with workhouse infirmaries providing isolation facilities and collaborating with sanitary authorities. Despite the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act's failure to address sickness as a major reason for pauperism, the medical service became a significant component of the local health economy, serving the whole community, not just the destitute. By the early 20th century, workhouse infirmaries were the predominant element of institutional medical care for the poor, providing "important institutional diagnostic spaces".
