Summary

Rules of Order and Respectful Environment

## Basic Rules of Order (pp. 5-10)

- The Chair: Responsible for facilitating debate, ensuring order, and not participating in discussions. They guide the meeting without becoming a "rules" enforcer.
- Making a Motion: A participant raises their hand and, upon recognition by the chair, states, "I move that we..." to propose a discussion or decision point. Examples include sending letters, accepting reports, spending money, scheduling meetings, or forming committees.
- Seconding a Motion: Another member supports the motion by saying, "Seconded."
- Amending a Motion and Amendments: Members can suggest changes to the original motion (amendments). The chair facilitates these amendments, and members vote on them before deciding on the main motion.
- Speaking on Motions/Amendments: Anyone can speak in support or opposition to a motion or amendment during allocated time.
- Ending Debate: The chair can close debate when there are no further speakers or after a set time limit.
- Postponing or Referring a Motion: Debate can be postponed for later consideration or referred to a committee.
- Point of Information: A member can seek clarification on a point during debate.
- Point of Order: Raises a procedural issue regarding the meeting's conduct.
- Challenging/Appealing the Chair: Members can challenge the chair's ruling, which is then decided by a vote.

## Statement of Respect (pp. 2-3)

NSGEU meetings uphold a policy of inclusivity and respect:

- No harassment or discrimination will be tolerated.
- All individuals are respected regardless of age, political views, religion, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, or first language.
- Diversity is celebrated to build solidarity among union members.
- Individuals have the right to dignity and equality, and bias, prejudice, and discrimination are confronted.
- Harassment/discrimination victims can contact the NSGEU Education Officer or executive for assistance.

## Land Acknowledgement (p. 4)

The meeting takes place on Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People, as recognized by historical treaties with the British Crown in 1725.
