Summary

Ruys de Beerenbrouck wordt beschreven als een toonbeeld van katholiciteit waar heel Limburg trots op moet zijn. Zijn invloed op de katholieken in de zuidelijke provinciën is groot, evenals op de bisschoppen. Hij wordt gekenschetst als een intrigante en heerszuchtige persoon, maar ook als iemand met leiderschapskwaliteiten. Tussen 1918 en 1939 maakten liberale en vrijzinnig-democratische figuren deel uit van zijn kabinetten, maar een radicaal andere regeringsvorm bleef uit vanwege de onwil van de katholieken om samen te werken met de sociaal-democraten. De conservatief-confessionele coalitie bleef dominant.
