Sam Houston was a congressman, senator, governor, president of the Republic of Texas, and a hero, born in Virginia in 1793 to a soldier father and a mother who managed the family farm. After his father's death, Houston's family moved to Tennessee, where he struggled with farming and store work, eventually living with the Cherokee Indians for a time. He joined the military to fight in the War of 1812, was wounded, and later became a lawyer and politician, serving in the US House of Representatives and as governor of Tennessee. Houston's personal life was marked by a painful divorce and struggles with alcohol, but he found new purpose in Texas, where he negotiated peace with the Comanche Indians and became a key figure in the Texas Revolution, eventually leading the Texas Army as commander-in-chief.
