Summary

The Sikh Coalition was created 20 years ago in response to hate violence and discrimination against Sikhs in the US after 9/11. Since then, the organization has provided pro bono legal support, advocated for Sikh rights, and worked to educate the public about Sikhism. In 2021, the coalition processed over 200 free legal intakes, sent 20,000+ messages to Congress, and helped pass major federal hate crime legislation. The organization also responded to the tragic shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, where four Sikh community members were killed, by providing support to the affected families and advocating for a full investigation. The Sikh Coalition continues to work with policymakers to address hate crimes and promote Sikh inclusion, and has updated its policy guidance to reflect new challenges and advocacy victories.
