Summary

James Arthur Spilling, a Private in the Pioneer Corps, was born on July 6, 1918. He was captured by the Japanese on March 18, 1942, at Garoet, Java, and held in various camps, including Glodock, Mojji, Tokyo HQ, and Sumidigawa. After the war ended, he was freed and boarded the HMS Speaker, then the Empress of Australia, which took him back to Liverpool. His niece, Margaret Hall, recalls the family's joy and relief upon his arrival, and James's own writings describe his experiences in the camps and his liberation.
