Summary

St George was born in 283 AD to a Greek family in Cappadocia, now Turkey. His father was martyred for Christ, and his mother moved to Palestine. St George joined the Roman Army, becoming a tribune, but was arrested and tortured for his faith during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. Despite cruel tortures, he survived and was miraculously healed, converting others to the faith, including the Emperor's wife. He was eventually beheaded. St George is considered a great saint, known as the Great-Martyr, the Miracle-Worker, the Trophy-Bearer, and the Victorious, due to his sacrifices and the miracles that occurred over his relics. He is often depicted as a Roman tribune on a horse defeating a dragon, which symbolizes the devil. His veneration has not ceased worldwide, and he remains a popular saint in many countries, including Portugal, England, and Russia.
