The Oudh & Rohilkhand Railway was formed in 1863 as the Indian Branch Railway Company, opening a 4-foot gauge line from Nalhati to Azimganj. The track was converted to broad-gauge in 1892 and became part of the East Indian Railway's Sahibganj Loop. The Government of India purchased the railway in 1872, renaming it the Oudh & Rohilkhand Railway. The railway expanded, with lines opening from Lucknow to Cawnpore, Benares, and other destinations. The Dufferin Bridge over the River Ganges was constructed between 1881 and 1887. The railway was taken over by the Government of India in 1889 and eventually absorbed by the East Indian Railway in 1925.
