The Romani language is an Indo-Aryan language spoken exclusively in Europe since the Middle Ages, with around 3.5 million speakers in Europe and 500,000 worldwide. It is a fully-fledged language with its own lexicon, grammar, and sound system, and is not to be confused with the diverse special vocabularies used by Traveller populations. Romani has several dialects, which derive from a single ancestor idiom, and its history shows influence from Central India, Northwest India, and Byzantine Greek. The language is spoken in southeastern Europe, particularly in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Macedonia, as well as in other parts of Europe.
