Summary

Andries van der Meer was born in 1921 in Rinowerden to a banker father who owned a small company. He was expected to follow in his father's footsteps but instead became an artist. Andries' mother was dominant and strict, and he credits her with influencing him the most. He grew up in a Christian village where Jews were scarce and viewed negatively due to religious teachings. Andries met his first Jewish person at a bank and later befriended a Jewish family, the Fackensteins, through the Brinkers. When the Germans began persecuting Jews, Andries and the Brinkers tried to help the Fackensteins, but they refused to hide due to their two young children. Andries eventually went into hiding himself after the Germans sought him, and he became friends with Karl Keiser, a Dutchman posing as a German soldier who helped hide people. Andries helped find hiding places for Jews, including a boy named Harry Rosenthal, and received letters from him and his sister after the war.
