Summary

The Portable Antiquities Scheme records archaeological finds made by the public to advance knowledge and tell the stories of past communities. The scheme is voluntary, but finders must report material that constitutes Treasure. The scheme records all types of archaeological finds, not just metal objects, and collects information about the objects, including description, weight, measurements, and findspot. Finders can gain identification and recording of their finds, advice on conservation and storage, and information about the Treasure Act. The Treasure Act 1996 requires the reporting of all Treasure finds, which belong to the Crown, and defines Treasure as objects that are at least 300 years old and have a metallic content of at least 10% precious metal, among other criteria.
