By 2050, the urban population is expected to gain 2.5 billion people, with two-thirds of the global population living in cities, posing a threat to culturally significant buildings due to demolition and new growth. Boston's Historic Districts Act of 1960 protects historic buildings, with 23 districts currently in place, but it's possible more are needed. Spatial analysis identifies areas where new districts could be created, and research suggests older buildings are more fascinating and memorable due to higher fixation points, which may be associated with increased value. However, analysis of building age, price per square foot, and fixation points in Boston reveals that building value does not strongly correspond to age or fixation points, with expensive buildings concentrated in different areas than older buildings or those with high fixation points. Despite this, Boston's historic districts acknowledge the importance of preserving old buildings and subconscious design value.
