Summary

The USS Akron, a huge helium-filled airship, was launched in 1931 and was the largest of its kind, carrying a crew of 89 and equipped with machine guns and reconnaissance biplanes. On May 11, 1932, while attempting to land in San Diego, the Akron encountered difficulties due to fog and buoyancy issues, causing the tail to rise and the airship to shoot skyward. Three sailors clinging to the mooring cable fell to their deaths, while a fourth, Charles M. "Bud" Cowart, managed to hang on and was eventually rescued after dangling for nearly two hours. The Akron landed successfully that evening, but less than a year later, it crashed in a thunderstorm, killing 73 men, and its sister ship, the USS Macon, also met a disastrous end in 1935, marking the end of the Navy's big airship era.
