Summary

Haji Mohamed Nur bin Mohamed Ghous, B.E.M., was born in Singapore in 1898 to a Malacca Malay father and a Singapore Malay mother. He had brief schooling and joined the Gardens service in 1911 or 1912, collecting seeds and working with hevea seeds. After I. H. Burkill's appointment as Director, Mohamed Nur was made Label Printer and later Plant Collector, collecting extensively in Malaya, Thailand, Sumatra, and Rhio. He was promoted to Herbarium and Museum Assistant in 1924, a post he held until his death in 1958, contributing significantly to the Singapore Herbarium's growth to become the fourth largest in Asia. Mohamed Nur's knowledge of Malaysian plants was comprehensive, and he accompanied notable botanists on expeditions, collecting and determining plant species with remarkable accuracy, despite lacking formal scientific training. His contributions to the field of botany are notable, although not marked by publications, as his efforts were often merged with those of others he assisted.
