Summary

The word "magic" originates from the Latin term "magia", related to the Greek "mageía" and Iranian "magu[s]", signifying "to be able to, to help". The concept of magic developed into three factors: magic as a science and knowledge of divine forces, magic as the exercise of such knowledge, and deceitful witchcraft. The notion of magic was influenced by various philosophers, including Empedocles, Democritus, and Pythagoras, who were familiar with the teachings of the Persian Magi. The Neoplatonists, such as Iamblichus and Proclus, further developed the concept of magic, introducing a hierarchical cosmos with emanations and intermediaries. The legacy of Neoplatonic cosmological theology and natural philosophy contributed to the formation of modern natural history, but also led to the misinterpretation of magic, resulting in the chaos of witch-hunts in Europe. The introduction of Arabian sources, such as the Picatrix, influenced the development of western magic, introducing astrological magic and the concept of talismans.
