Summary

A woodland survey was conducted over 11 days on the Wakefield Lodge Estate, systematically walking the woodland and noting all man-made earthworks. The results show a surviving medieval coppice system, which can be traced on the 1610 Whittlewood Map. The survey identified various earthworks, including banks, ditches, trackways, and ridge and furrow, in several copse areas, including Old Tun Copse, Say's Copse, Smalladine Copse, King's Copse, Bear's Copse, Lady Copse, and Oakley Spinney. Many of these copse areas have been reduced in size over time, but still retain medieval features, such as coppice banks and ditches. The survey also identified internal alignments and possible stallage routes, including the Paulerspury stallage and the Yardley Gobion stallage. The medieval coppice system is believed to have been created in the 12th or early 13th century, with some features still surviving today.
