The town's story was previously known mainly through the writings of Josephus Flavius, a Jewish historian who participated in the revolt. However, archaeological excavations conducted between 1992 and 2000 uncovered physical evidence that sheds new light on the town's history and the myth surrounding it.

The excavations revealed three main layers of the town's story: daily life in a 1st-century Galilean town, preparations for the revolt and its impact on the residents, and the story of the battle that led to the town's tragic end. The town was founded during the Hasmonean period, and its name is derived from the name of a Seleucid princess, Jotapa.

The Roman army, led by Vespasian and his son Titus, besieged the town, and after 47 days of fighting, the town was conquered, and its residents were massacred. The excavations uncovered the town's fortifications, including a wall and towers, as well as a hidden tunnel and a pottery kiln. The findings also revealed a wealthy household with frescoed walls and a painted floor, indicating a higher standard of living than previously thought.

The discovery of the town's remains and the story of its battle has raised questions about the "spirit of the place" and how it should be preserved and presented to the public. The site is currently being developed as a national park, and the challenge is to balance the need to preserve the site's history and cultural significance with the need to make it accessible and engaging for visitors.
