Summary

The story of the wise men in Matthew 2:1-12 is full of Eastern promise, where God makes himself known to those outside the regular circle of his acquaintance. The wise men, as outsiders, are able to see the working of God in the world through the unusual star, and their journey takes them to Jerusalem, but not directly to Bethlehem. The story shows the possibilities and limits of a faith founded on personal discovery and investigation, which can get one to Jerusalem but not to Bethlehem, where the God of Jesus Christ is fully revealed. The wise men's journey also demonstrates the importance of humility and recognizing mistakes, as well as the political threat that Jesus poses to the status quo.
