Summary

Das Ölbild Johannes Keplers im Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseum wurde restauriert und untersucht. Die Maltechnik und der Pinselduktus deuten auf eine ältere Malerei, vermutlich aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Die Untersuchung ergab, dass das Bild mehrmals restauriert und übermalt wurde, insbesondere die untere Partie des Bildes. Der Name "Keppler" auf dem Bild stammt wahrscheinlich aus der 2. Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Restaurierung ergab, dass der Kopf des Dargestellten nicht verändert wurde. Das Bild zeigt Kepler im Alter von etwa 40 Jahren, in einer intimen und unmittelbaren Darstellung, die seinen Charakter und seine Persönlichkeit widerspiegelt. Die kunsthistorische Analyse legt nahe, dass das Bild authentisch ist und Kepler darstellt.
