On 16 April, the Anzac Corps' situation changed as the main threat shifted to its eastern flank, with the 21st New Zealand Battalion at the Platamon tunnel facing a strong German attack, including 150 tanks. Despite initial resistance, the battalion was forced to retire, and its commander, Colonel Macky, reported that he could no longer hold. Brigadier Clowes was sent to take charge, and he ordered Macky to deny the gorge to the enemy until 19 April, even if it meant extinction. The battalion was eventually ferried across the gorge, and the ferry was sunk. Meanwhile, reinforcements, including the 2/2nd Battalion, were sent to the Pinios Gorge to hold the western exit.
