Summary

In the early 1970s, Seiko developed CMOS LSI circuits for watches, starting with the SEIKO Quartz Astron 35SQ in 1969. Suwa Seiko-sha (now Seiko Epson) developed a CMOS IC (R-38A) operating at 1.5V in 1971, used in the SEIKO Analog Quartz 38SQW. They then developed the world's first liquid crystal display watch CMOS LSI (R-57) in 1972, released as the SEIKO Digital Quartz 06LC in 1973. These advancements drove the Japanese semiconductor industry forward, with in-house manufactured CMOS ICs adopted for all Seiko Epson quartz watch products.
