Summary

The Neri Bloomfield School of Design, in collaboration with the Emek Yizreel Regional Council, conducted a preservation survey in 22 settlements in the Emek Yizreel area. The research was led by Avner Amir, an architect and member of the Council for the Preservation of Heritage Sites in Israel, and Prof. Baruch Baruch and Dr. Liora Bar-Am Schachal. The study focused on the design of communal settlements, known as kibbutzim, which were established in the early 20th century. These settlements were based on a combination of Zionist and socialist ideologies. The first cooperative settlement, Merhavia, was established in 1911 and adopted the model of a German educational farm. The first planned kibbutz, Degania B, was designed by Fritz Kornberg in 1922. The design was based on a typical courtyard plan and was the first to be approved and funded by the Zionist settlement department. The kibbutz movement gained momentum in the 1920s and 1940s, with over 40 kibbutzim and moshavim established in the Emek Yizreel area. Notable architects who worked in the area during this period include Richard Kaufmann and Arieh Sharon.
