The Ming dynasty established a strict regulatory framework for official and private use of vessels, clothing, and patterns starting from the Hongwu era (1368-1398). This system, targeting all levels of society from royalty to commoners, even dictated intricate details such as specific decorative motifs. These motifs, including elements like the sun, moon, dragons, lions, qilin, rhinos, and elephants, were classified as "prohibited" patterns, with their use strictly regulated to distinguish social ranks.

The limited number of excavated Ming dynasty noble tombs, along with their rich burial artifacts, provides a unique opportunity for cross-referencing archaeological findings with historical texts. This study examines the burial items from these tombs to understand the practical application of these prohibitions among royal and noble families during the early Ming period.

Analysis reveals that buried artifacts align closely with the prescribed regulations regarding class-appropriate vessels and patterns, suggesting a consistent "system" in place. This consistency indicates the existence of some form of control over the use of forbidden motifs, particularly during the initial years of the Hongwu era, confirming the historical records that these prohibitions were largely adhered to by Ming dynasty nobles.
