Current regulations on equine dental procedures are governed by the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as the regulatory body. The Act considers all diagnostic and treatment procedures in a horse's mouth as acts of veterinary surgery, except for manual removal of small dental overgrowths and sharp enamel points.

The RCVS, along with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT), has established a grading system for equine dental procedures. Category 1 procedures can be performed by suitably trained individuals, including examination of teeth, removal of sharp enamel points, and removal of small dental overgrowths.

Category 2 procedures can be delegated to qualified equine dental technicians (EDTs) who have passed an approved examination, but only under direct and continuous veterinary supervision for certain procedures, such as removal of erupted, non-displaced wolf teeth. Category 3 procedures, including those involving vascular or innervated tissue, are restricted to qualified veterinary surgeons.

It is illegal for non-veterinarians to dispense, supply, or stock prescription-only drugs, and only qualified veterinary surgeons can perform certain procedures, such as diastemata widening and unerupted wolf tooth removal. The key points are:
- Only category 1 procedures are currently legal for non-veterinarians.
- Category 2 procedures have an "amnesty" for qualified and accredited EDTs, but require direct veterinary supervision for certain procedures.
- Category 3 procedures can only be performed by qualified veterinary surgeons.
- Erupted and non-displaced wolf tooth removal requires direct and constant supervision by a qualified veterinary surgeon.
- Only qualified veterinary surgeons can dispense prescription-only medications (POMs), and only the veterinarian or owner can administer them.
