The Supreme Court of India heard a batch of cases challenging the Executive's Scheme dated 28.01.2009 and the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. The cases were divided into four groups: 16 Writ Petitions challenging the notification and/or the Act, 7 Transfer Cases/Transfer petitions, 1 Special Leave Petition (Criminal), and 7 Contempt Petitions alleging violation of interim orders. The background facts leading to the issuance of the notification and the Act were noted, including the rapid increase in India's population, the enactment of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and the amendment of the Act in 2004 to provide for compulsory registration of citizens and issuance of national identity cards. The Unique Identification Project was conceived by the Planning Commission to provide a Unique Identity Number for each resident, and the UIDAI was constituted under the aegis of the Planning Commission of India.
