Summary

The Inebriates Act [Chapter 9:11] allows courts to order the detention of habitual drunkards in inebriate reformatories for up to three years, in addition to or in substitution for other sentences, if the offence was committed under the influence of drink or drunkenness was a contributory cause. Magistrates courts have jurisdiction to impose such sentences, which are subject to review by the High Court. A warrant of conviction is issued by the court, setting forth the offence and period of detention, and is transmitted to the relevant officer, along with an account of the person's history and antecedents.
