The legal profession has a long history, with its origins tracing back to ancient Greece and Rome. In ancient Greece, the profession of orators emerged, but it was not well-regarded. In ancient Rome, there were two categories of legal professionals: Juris consults and Procurators. The modern adversarial common law-based legal system originated in the UK, where the profession was formalized through various legislations and regulations. In India, the development of the legal profession can be divided into four phases: ancient, medieval, British, and post-independence. In ancient India, the king was the foundation head of justice, and the judicial system was based on the principle of Dharma. There was no organized legal profession, but a class of legal representatives existed. In medieval India, the Muslim rulers introduced the Qazi system, and lawyers known as Vakil were appointed to defend civil suits. The British rule in India introduced a new hierarchy of courts and the institution of the legal profession, which has since evolved to become a noble and essential profession in the administration of justice.
