Researchers from the Interdisciplinary Institute for Ethics and Human Rights and the Department of Public Law of the University of Fribourg collaborated on a project to study the intersectionality of human rights violations and multiple discrimination from 2013 to 2015. The project aimed to analyze the dynamics and consequences of intersectional human rights violations and identify obstacles and challenges in addressing them. The researchers used a multidimensional case study approach and found that intersectional human rights violations have a devastating impact on victims, but are not sufficiently considered in the international human rights system. They argue that human rights are political and ethical norms that should be translated into actions and mechanisms, and that the principles of universality, indivisibility, and interdependence of all rights should be operationalized in policies and legal work. However, they note that there is no common agreement on how to operationalize these principles, and that the current approach of analyzing each article of human rights instruments separately can neglect the interdependency of rights.
