Summary

Please note, these are suggestions only. We understand that you may not have some or most of these supplies.
Please contact us for help if you are unable to get these supplies for your course. You may draw or paint for the full
course, but all potential supplies needed are listed here.

DRAWING:

Drawing board. The best kind is a piece of chipboard or masonite from the art store or hardware store that
is cut for you to be 1" bigger than your paper on all sides. So if you have paper that is 18"x24" ask them to
cut it 19" x 25" NOTE: We have some drawing boards on site to borrow.

A good quality pad of drawing paper such as Strathmore Bristol Smooth 400 series drawing paper, 18 x 24

Newsprint pad 18"x24"

Artist Tape

4 Binder clips to attach the paper to your board

Any brand pencils, suggested at least two of the following: 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, H, 2H graphite pencils (I like
the Tombow brand or Staedtler brand that are painted blue and black at the back end...the ones made of
real wood. Other brands are fine though.)

Kneaded Eraser & any hard eraser

Pencil Sharpener or razor blade
Optional Drawing:

Tombow MONO Zero Refillable eraser

willow vine charcoal

charcoal pencils (soft, medium, and hard- Faber-Castell Pitt pack suggested)

1 or 2 Black pastel sticks (helpful to have a pastel holder such as this by Koh-I-Noor Hardmuth)
ACRYLIC PAINTING (younger artists):

Acrylic paints (not tempera) in a minimum of the following colors: Cadmium red light, cadmium yellow
medium, Ultramarine blue, Ivory black, titanium white

An assortment of brushes small and medium size: filbert and round synthetic bristle (See note on brushes
and paint below)

A small palette knife

Palette paper (at least 9”x12")

Canvas paper or canvas boards, at least 9”x12"

Paper towels

Plastic wrap or Ziploc bag for transporting dirty brushes home. We do not have a slop sink so the
majority of the brush-cleaning will happen at home.

OIL PAINTING (teens & adults):

Oil paint (Windsor & Newton suggested, but it's your choice. Please avoid student-grade oil paint as they
are more difficult to work with.)
-Blue Black or Cold Black or Ivory Black or Black Spinel
-Titanium White
-Cad Lemon or Cad Yellow Light
-Quinacridone Magenta
-Ultramarine Blue
-Alizarin Permanent
-Cobalt Teal or Cobalt Turquoise
-Transparent Red Oxide or Burnt Sienna
-Raw Umber
-Transparent Earth Yellow

Brushes are a personal choice. These brushes (Princeton Real Value Brush Set - 9154, Bristle, Long
Handle, Set of 7, Item#06223-9154 from Blick) are a good middle of the road choice for students. Blick's
Wonder White brushes are also a good economical choice. Whether brushes are expensive or
inexpensive, the key to their usefulness and longevity is taking good care of them!

Cotton rags or good paper towels (Viva brand recommended)

Gamsol Brand Mineral Spirits 16.9 oz or larger – no turpentine

Leak-proof jars (2) this can be old peanut butter jars or something.

Gray paper palette like "Gray Matters" brand– lightweight, around 12 x 16 inches, or any flat surface to
place paint on

Palette knife (I recommend Blick Painting Knife - 3/4'' x 3 1/4'', Painting, Style 26)

Painting surfaces like canvas or board in the medium sizes you like.

Plastic wrap or Ziploc bag for transporting dirty brushes home. We do not have a slop sink so the
majority of brush-cleaning will happen at home.
*Blick Wonder White brushes are good quality and cost-effective, as are the Blick Studio acrylic paints. We
recommend Blick for your shopping needs. Their store brand student-grade supplies are pretty good. The exception
to this would be oil paint. Please don't buy student-grade oil paint as the unweildy nature of these inferior paints
works against you. We've seen many students buy cheap oil paint, only to have to throw it all away. Invest in Gamblin
or Windsor-Newton and your money will be much more well spent!
