Summary

Matsuo Basho was born around 1644, became a servant to Todo Yoshitada, and developed a love for haikai no renga poetry. After Yoshitada's death in 1666, Basho's life became uncertain, but he continued to publish poems and eventually moved to Edo to study poetry. He adopted the principle of karumi, or "lightness," and spent his final years teaching and composing poetry, dying in 1694 with his last recorded poem being "tabi ni yande / yume wa kareno wo / kake meguru," or "falling sick on a journey / my dream goes wandering / over a field of dried grass.
