The story begins in the fifth century after the birth of Christ, in the Norse lands of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, where King Hrothgar, a fierce and generous warrior, rules over the Danes. He builds a huge mead-hall, Heorot, to celebrate his prosperity, but a monster, Grendel, emerges from the darkness, sworn enemy of God and men, and slaughters thirty of Hrothgar's lords, bringing grief and despair to the kingdom.
