Summary

Eva Geulen's article "Serialization in Goethe's Morphology" discusses Goethe's concept of morphology as a "new science" and its potential contribution to an epistemology of comparison. Goethe's plans for morphology did not come to fruition, but his "Notebooks on Morphology" (1817-1824) remain, offering a heterogeneous collection of texts, including reviews, poems, letters, and schemata. Despite their disorganized appearance, Goethe believed these notebooks demonstrated "folgerechtes Bemühen" (continuous, consistent efforts) and prized Folgerichtigkeit (logical consistency) as a model for systematic comparisons, which can be seen as his only methodological maxim.
