Summary

Sentient creatures that are not human are united in one stratum, coexisting with but secret from humans. Most are immortal, can regenerate, and are killed only by mystical fire or beheading. The Lykae Clan are immortal warriors with the spirit of a beast latent within them, possessing the Instinct, an inner guiding force, and mate for life. The Ubus Peoples are descendants of demons, deriving nourishment from sexual enjoyment and forming a mystical bond called venom after a third mating. The Accession is a mystical checks-and-balances system where immortals must fight and destroy each other every 500 years. The story begins with Uilleam MacRieve, a Lykae, preparing to leave his mate, Lady Ruelle, in an enchanted cottage in the Woods of Murk, Scotland, as he is weary from her antics and needs to return to Conall Keep before his family realizes he is gone.
