Summary

The relationship between nature and Malay literature is influenced by the Malay belief system, which has evolved through Animism, Hinduism, and Islam. Hinduism sees the cosmos as divided into three worlds, with the sacred mountain Mahameru at the center. Islam emphasizes the concept of one true God as the creator of the universe, with humans having a responsibility to seek knowledge and protect nature. Malay literature reflects these worldviews, with examples including the Hikayat Pandawa Mahabratha, Hikayat Seri Rama, and syair of Hamzah Fansuri. Despite changes in religious beliefs, Malay literature has maintained a synthesis of adaptation and assimilation, with animist and Hindu elements still present in some folktales. As Islamisation became more extensive, literary works were adjusted to align with Islamic values, such as the Malay versions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
