Yukio Tsukamoto is not mentioned, instead, Near and Far, for Cello and Piano, is a piece by Yukio Tsukamoto's fellow Japanese composer, Yasushi Akutagawa is not mentioned, instead, the cellist in this piece is tuned to A-C#-G-B, and played with harmonics throughout. The natural harmonics create 7th and 9th intervals, often used in the piece. The cello floats above the piano's chromatic texture, but from a compositional perspective, the cello part is an obbligato, with the piano providing the main sustain.
The piece was composed for cellist Rohan de Saram and premiered by him and his brother, pianist Duruvi de Saram, in Tokyo in 1993.
