Summary

Peter Townsend was appointed editor of Studio International in 1965, and his policy pioneered the magazine's presentation of new experimental practices and art-for-the-page, as well as the magazine as an alternative exhibition site. The thesis explores Townsend's editorial papers from 1965-1975, which provide off-scene accounts into the commissions and connections to other archives, leading to interviews with key figures such as David Antin, Dore Ashton, and Seth Siegelaub. The project was supported by grants from the Henry Moore Foundation, The Elephant Trust, and the Arts Council of England, and the author thanks numerous individuals, including Peter Townsend and his daughters, for sharing their memories of the magazine and its editor.
