Summary

A DM is asked about a situation where a PC sorcerer tries to attack an NPC behind a glass window. The question is whether the window stops the line of effect and if the DM's ruling on damage was correct. According to the Player's Handbook, a solid barrier cancels line of effect, and the window, although flimsy, is a solid barrier. The attack hits the window, and unless the damage breaks through it, the attack does not affect the NPC. The DM's ruling was incorrect, as the attack should have been redirected against the window, not the NPC. A possible house rule could be to create a feat that allows spells or attacks to penetrate solid barriers, such as "penetrating shot" or "penetrating spell".
