Summary

Magnetic stirring is used in laboratory procedures, but selecting the right stirring bar is often overlooked. The drive magnet, vessel shape, viscosity, and abrasiveness of materials should be considered when choosing a stirring bar. The distance between the magnetic poles of the drive magnet and the length of the stirring bar should be equal for optimum coupling. The stirring bar should be positioned over the center of the drive magnet, and the speed increased slowly to achieve the desired vortex pattern. Vertical distance between the drive magnet and stirring bar should be minimized, and the shape of the stirring bar influences the resulting vortex. Magnetic stirring bars are made of ALNICO or Samarium Cobalt magnets encapsulated in FDA-approved Teflon, and come in various shapes and sizes for different applications, including general stirring, high temperature stirring, and viscous solutions.
