They have a principal advantage over other types of relief valves, sealing in accordance with API 2000 requirements and being fully open at 10% above set pressure. This allows for operating pressure closer to the maximum allowable working pressure of the tank, reducing evaporation and total venting volume. The pilot operated valve is a self-contained system that automatically controls the actuator pressure to open or close the main valve depending on the pressure setting of the pilot vs. the actual system pressures. The valve operates by sensing system media and pressure, and when the system pressure rises to the pilot set point, the pilot stem lifts, allowing flow through the pilot and out to the atmosphere, causing the pressure in the actuator to drop and the main valve to open. The main valve remains open as long as the tank pressure is higher than the pilot valve set pressure, and closes when the tank pressure decreases to the pilot valve reseat pressure.
